Phew...I think we are starting to settled in and get back into the swing of things. I have to say that last week the kids felt it, I felt it, and I am sure you all felt it. It was exhausting! We all forgot what it was like to have to go to school! This week the students settled in much better and we fastened our seat belts and got straight to work. This week.... Math: We finished our second go around on multiplication and division. Students took their module assessment. We are now on to perimeter and area! Literacy: We are continuing to study a character in depth from one of our chapter books. We are reading aloud Because of Winn Dixie in class right now, so we have been working together to learn a lot about Opal, the main character. Students are paying close attention to how their character talks and acts to help them establish a theory about what kind of person their character is. For example, we decided Opal is big hearted because she is always willing to open her heart to anyone. Writing: We are putting our finishing touches on our Expository pieces. Students have been working hard to write topic sentence, introductions, conclusions, and include text features in their final piece! We will move to opinion writing next! Social Studies: We are continuing to look into map systems and how they help us navigate our world. Students had the opportunity to learn how to code. They learned different symbols and then had to code their way to stacking cups in a certain order. The pictures below show a few students using arrows to code! Ask them all about it! They had another opportunity to code on their Chromebooks to participate in Hour of Code. Again, they can tell you all about it! Students also came home with a homework assignment for Social Studies. As a part of our PYP Unit, How the World Works, students are looking into how a map is useful for their journey from home to school. They have learned about the different components of a map and now need to use them on a map unique to them!

This is what we do when we ACTUALLY go to school...
Thank YOU to the parents who put on our AMAZING Winter Party. I know the students had such a fun time! Math: We have returned to looking at multiplication and division again. Students are solving multiplicatin and divisoin problems using the commutative, associative, and distributive property. We will continue working on those skills for the next few weeks. Continue to practice math facts! I can see the students greatly improving. Social Studies: We are continuing on our PYP Unit: How We Organize Ourselves by looking at mapping systems. Students looked a variety of maps and determined what their form and function was. They also deteremed what a map key is and the importance of one. Writing: We are writing out informative writing pieces. They learned how to write topic sentences for each of their paragraphs. They started to do some additional research to gather facts about their natural hazard they are writing about. Literacy: We ended our Non-Fiction unit by reading one last article and determining the author's main idea, the author's purpose, and the text structure. Students also did an outstanding job on their speeches!! They were incredible and very well put together! I was very proud of their effort and hard work they put into making something so insightful! Thanks for all your help at home with this project, too! We celebrated the end of Shiloh by watching the movie. Students compared and contrasted the movie to the book and discovered the movie was full of many differences. This week we will look back at fiction novels to look in depth at characters. Students also received their January book project. |
