This week we were able to get back into our rhythm and routine. I feel like they have grown so quickly since September and are really making progress as students. Students continue to work on multiplication and division using the associative property and distributive property. It blows my mind what these students are capable of doing. We will continue to work through module 3. Students know that on Friday, January 22nd they will have math quiz on their 0 and 1 multiplication facts. They need to be able to recognize any multiplied by 0 is zero and anything multiplied by 1 is that number. In order to pass their math facts test they will need 90 facts in five minutes. Students finished up their researching this week. They did such a wonderful job using articles, books and ipads to conduct their research on a natural disaster of their choice. They used that information to create a brochure on how the world works with an emphasis on force and motion. Students made connections to the book, Shilo. They learned that readers make text-to-self connections to help relate and understand books they read. Many students talked about animals they have rescued or situations where they saw animals being mistreated. In the story Shilo, a boy, Marty, is trying to rescue a dog that he feels has been mistreated. Students are also continuing to use proof in their answers by using evidence from the texts they read.
Enjoy the three day weekend!

Whew, what a crazy week it was! Such a great treat for the students and teachers to wake up to no school and a delayed start. Here is a peek into our week:
Math- We started multiplication and division once again....this time using letters to represent unknown numbers. It amazes me third graders are learning how to solve multiplication and division sentences using letters. They are going to be very prepared for the first pre-algebra or algebra class. ;-) Science- We began our working on natural disasters. Students are learning how forces of nature can cause natural disasters. They are spending time learning about a natural disaster of their choice. They are researching about the causes of their disasters, the effect on people, the effect on the earth, what they look like, etc. They are using that information to help write an explanatory paper as well as create an informational brochure. Literacy- We have been discussing how authors often leave clues in their writing to help readers understand words they may not know when reading. Students learned a context clues rap to help them remember some strategies to help uncover the meaning of a word they might not know when reading. We also began a new read aloud book, Shilo. The students made predictions about the story based on the front cover. They also discussed the setting of the story by providing textual evidence. Feel free to ask them about the setting of the story! See if they can remember! Writing- Students learned the purpose of explanatory writing. The purpose is to explain something to someone or to inform. Students noticed explanatory writing often times includes pictures, diagrams, maps, captions, etc. They are using their research about their natural disaster to organize an explanatory essay. They are doing a great job! I hope you all had a relaxing break! Kait |
