Last week was a week of fun filled activities! Students met with their buddies and had the chance to play a game that taught students the meaning of bully, pleasant, and unpleasant. The following day the students got to learn all about Vietnamese New Year thanks for an incredible parent who came in to do a wonderful presentation. The students learned a few words, got to see different outfits, and learn all about the foods they eat as well. Such a great cultural learning experience! Lastly, on Friday was Art Literacy! The students carved soap, which required them to be patient with their work. The classroom smelled great, though! Math: We continued with our module on area. Students will be taking their Math Module 4 Assessment on March 9th and 10th. After that we will be getting into our unit on fractions. Writing: Students continued working on their opinion pieces. They chose from a variety of writing prompts in which they then had to support their opinion with three reasons. Some of the students chose a topic such as: "Should children be able to ground their parents?" or "Are dogs or cats better pets?". They were very excited to write about why their opinion is convincing. Literacy: We learned that authors leave messages or lessons in their stories. We learned what about different themes found in stories such as: compassion, friendship, honesty, and respect. We talked about what the word moral meant and tried to find the moral of several books we read.

I just have to say thank you for all of the Valentines yesterday. I was not expecting so much and when the students kept pouring their gifts into my arms, I couldn't help but think how fortunate I am to have such a loving class and incredible parents who support them. So THANK YOU! We had a great time passing out Valentines to each other and the kiddos were beyond excited to see each other's Valentine boxes. Here are a couple photos I snapped real quick while the students had a blast! Math: This week we started area! It was a very basic introduction to area, but I have to say how impressed I am with them grasping how to find the area. We will continue to work through finding the area of different shapes for the next few weeks.
Social Studies: We finished our PYP study of How We Express Ourselves. Students made their own island to show what they learned about maps and the important aspects maps have. They also finished mapping their route from home to school. Thank you for all your help that went into helping them! They look AWESOME! :) We will be moving into regions and Native Americans soon. Writing: We practiced writing an opinion piece as a class after reading the book Hey, Little Ant! The book leaves it up to the reader's choice as to whether the ant should be saved or smashed. We decided as a class to write our opinion on the any being saved. This week students will write their own opinion piece on a topic of their choice. I can't wait to see what is produced! Literacy: Our focus this week was on Point of View. We looked through a variety of books and determined what the point of view was of each of the books. Students learned that if a book is told by a character it is in first person and if it told by the narrator or author it is third person. At home you can be asking your child while they read their books at home if their book is written in first or third person. We also made predictions about our read aloud book, Shiloh. The students have been very involved and connected to the story! We will continue to use the program PracTutor to work on our testing skills to get prepared for our upcoming testing in the Spring! Keep practicing those math facts!! Enjoy your long weekend! Hello!
As Spring time nears, it means testing must be getting closer and closer. As you know, this is the first year of testing for third graders. Third grade is kind of that grade where school starts to become harder and harder! Ugh! In our class we have started practicing and looking into how testing is going to work. We are working on a website called PracTutor. This website is a place where students can practice questions similar to how the test will be in the Spring. We have also been working on Scholastic News Articles where students are having to read the articles, show textual evidence for their answers, and compare and contrast the information found in the different articles. Here is what else has been going on: Math: We are almost done with the module on multiplication and division. Students will be taking the end of the module assessment on Monday and Tuesday of next week. They will be expected to know the commutative property, associative property, and distributive property as well as represent math problems using unknown variables. Sheesh...you'd probably be thinking I was writing this for a sixth grade pre-algebra class. But these kiddos can do it! We are also working on our multiplication and division fact memorization. We want students to no longer skip count to find their answers but use their memory! Social Studies: Students have been exploring maps, learning about map keys, map scales, and compasses. They have been discussing what is the function of maps (how they work) and the different form of maps (what do they look like). We have also looked at how maps have changed over time and how GPS systems are beginning to lead to driveless cars. Students had a homework assignment of mapping their route to school to help familiarize themselves with where they are in the world/community and how to create a map. Writing: We have finished our expository writing unit! Students did an outstanding job researching and then writing about their natural disaster. I am very excited to read them over and see how well they did! We are moving on to opinion writing next week! Literacy: During literacy this week we started Book Clubs. Students are reading in a group and working towards completing a variety of activities based on the book their group is reading. They did an incredible job taking turns while reading and working together as a team to complete their activity. This week they had to create a poster representing the setting(s) of their book, and then they had to show proof from the text that their setting was correct. They each took on different roles within the group and did a great job making sure everyone played a part. |
