Thanks for all of you who made it to conferences. It is always nice to get to know you all more than just a wave after school or a quick hello in the morning. Math: We started learning about elapsed time. Students were posed the question "How could you represent a clock on a number line?" They all worked collaboratively to create different methods of putting a clock on a number line. Each group came up with some outstanding ideas! After learning it was possible we decided number lines could also help us with elapsed time. See the poster below. This is how we are practicing elapsed time...with mountains, hills, and rocks. :) They are all having a lot of fun and doing outstanding! Writing: We continued working on writing our personal narrative. Students are completing their last edits before they start typing (woo hoo) their final copies. We went through the rules of using Chromebooks. Students are now on Google Classroom ready to turn in their personal narratives online. So fancy! They are absolutely loving the Chromebooks. Students also learned that authors do not write in one chunk of words but rather organize their writing in paragraphs. We discussed what makes a paragraph and how do we know when a new one starts.
Literacy: We spent some time discussing how authors leave clues and it is our job as readers to use them to help us understand words we come across and do not know. They practice finding clues in their chapter books. Science: We started our new PYP Theme: How the World Works with our central idea being "Forces of nature affect living things." Students were given the activity to stand in a circle and with no talking categorize a set of pictures. Students created two categories: push and pull and natural disasters. It wasn't long after until students began to realize that push and pull represented force. Then they came up with how there are forces in natural disasters/hazards. Students were able to piece everything together to come up with our central idea without me directly telling them what we would be studying. As a part of our PYP model we also look at different learner profiles/attitudes each theme. We are currently looking at commitment, communicator, caring, empathy, and balanced. Students created posters representing one attitude or profile and how it connected with our central idea.
