We have gone digital. A very sweet teacher has given us the opportunity to use her Chromebooks. For the past couple weeks we have been working on a lot of our assignments digitally. Next they will have the opportunity to use their own Chromebook through the school year. I felt it was very important to at least introduce them to the Chromebooks so they would be familiar with them next year. I created a Google Classroom where all of their assignments are posted and turned in. They LOVE it. I will assign them a quick quiz and they can take it on there and then submit to me for grading. It has been a very fun process.
In math students worked in groups this week to collect, organize, and interpret data. They were responsible for asking students a question and then gathering data on it. They organized their data in a google sheets where they were able to determine how many students voted for whatever topic they surveyed the class about. They then create large bar graphs to represent their findings. In writing students are writing their final personal narrative of the year. They have been typing away! I pulled out their personal narratives from the beginning of the year and they were blown away at the improvements they made. They were dumbfounded to see how "poorly" they thought they wrote at the beginning of the year. It was a very rewarding moment for each of them to see their incredible progress. In science/literacy we did some reading and research on a variety of bridges. Students saw a short clip about extreme bridges found throughout the world. They then read about the earliest bridges and how people crossed rivers or gaps of land before concrete, metal, etc. Students then started creating bridges out of a limited amount of popsicle sticks. They needed to create a bridge to span a 25 cm gap and withstand the weight of as many pennies as possible. Check out the pictures below to see the early stages of their planning.
