We have been busy studying many new things in our classroom! We started our third PYP Theme: How We Organize Ourselves. Students will learn that systems in our world help keep us organized. The emphasis will be on map systems. Math: We finished our second module in math. Our second module included rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, estimating the capacity and weight of different objects, adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers, telling time, and elapsed time. Reading: We are continuing to work on non-fiction. Students learned that when authors write, they write with a purpose. They learned that identifying the author's purpose is as "Easy as pie". Authors usually write with the purpose to "P"ersuade, "I"nform, or "E"ntertain. We started off by looking at a variety of commercials and identifying the purpose of each one. Students also identified the author's purpose of their current silent reading book as well as of non-fiction articles. They looked through Scholastic Book Order Magazines to cut out examples of books where the author was either trying to persuade, inform, or entertain. They organized the book titles into the three different categories. Writing: Students explored informative writing pieces and came up with several important pieces that informative writing includes. Students also identified their topic and subtopics of their writing piece.
Social Studies: Students had the opportunity to explore a few different maps. They identified the form (what do you see) and the function (how does the map work) of each map. They had LOTS of fun opening up giant maps and seeing all of the different features on a map.
