Hello, Now that we are nearly a month into school and we are getting deeper into multiplication, it is important to get your students practicing those multiplication math facts. Students these days love anything relating to technology, so I found a website that lists 2o different apps that can be downloaded on an iPad to help your child practice multiplication. Click on the link below to begin reading about the different apps. They need to have these memorized. If your child memorizes their facts, math from here on out with be much easier for them. It is one of the best math skills your child can learn this year. Start small and add more and more facts each week. Memorizing division facts should not be far behind either. Two extremely important concepts they should know.
I am trying my best to get the volunteer schedule finished and organized because I would love to have all your help. Hang tight! I should have it finish by next week. Speaking of schedules...I made a mistake on last week's schedule and said the students had technology on Friday rather than library. The world just about ended in Miss Hodgkinson's room. They panicked because some did not have their library books to turn in. Students can bring their books on Monday (Sept. 28th) and check out new ones. :) Just as a head's up, I will be out of the classroom on Tuesday attending a third grade meeting. Students are aware I will be gone but we will be discussing classroom expectations when a guest teacher is in our classroom. I feel like a parent when they leave their baby for the first time...I would much rather be with the students than stuck in a meeting all day. But I am confident they will do well! A couple reminders: students should be practicing their spelling words each day to help with their test on Friday. Many of them nailed their spelling words this week! Well done! :) And secondly, don't forget to sign their reading log Thursday night!! I should be sending home their assessment folders on Thursday, so you can get a glimpse of how they are doing in school. Please make sure to send those assessments back! I would like them for their portfolio! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend despite both Oregon football team losses :(

We made it through the first week jitters, and I can't tell you how proud I am of each one of these students. They dove straight into school and are working hard on everything! I can tell this is going to be a great year because you have incredible children.
The focus for this week has been on getting to know one another and understanding "Who We Are" (to borrow from the Primary Years Program language). We have completed several activities that have allowed the students and me to get a better idea of who is in our class. Thanks to you as well for helping me out by writing a letter about your child. It gives me a much better idea of who I have in my classroom and ideas of how I can best support them. We are working hard as a class to support one another and value each other's differences. I can tell you that our class has already received nine compliments (YES NINE!!) from teacher's around the school for their positive behavior, quiet lines, and for following directions. Woo hoo! Way to go! Make sure you tell your child that you're proud of them! I also watched two students look out for their classmates by helping a student find our class lunch table and by praising a student for trying their best. :) Starting next week we will dive into math. You will begin to see math homework come home each night. This might be new for your child as your child's second grade class may have done math homework differently. It important they bring their math homework back the next day to turn in. We have talked about their responsibility of turning in homework on time and doing their best to not forget it at home. Please support your child in creating that life long habit! They also know their homework is to come home in their red homework folder and return back to school in their red homework folder. This helps keep papers from being crumpled and/or lost! I look forward to seeing you all again at Curriculum Night, Thursday, September 17th from 6:30-8:00 PM. Remember this is for adults only! Have a wonderful weekend, Miss. Hodgkinson Parents/Guardians,
I am looking forward to the start of the 2015-2016 school year with your child! I am a firm believer in communication. I will use this site as much as possible to keep you updated about what is happening within the four walls of our classroom. I will also send home a monthly newsletter with your child. You will find important information as well as a summary of what your child is learning in school. However, please feel free to contact me as much as needed! I am excited to kick this year off! ~Miss Hodgkinson (Hodge-kin-sin) |
