Hi there!
We have been busy in the classroom. Between testing, buddies, and guest speakers, we have been doing lots! Here is what we have been up to lately... Math: We have been doing a series of geometry learning about parallelograms, trapezoids, angles, and many other polygons. After learning about geometry we started working on reading graphs and charts. Students have been learning about line plots, pictographs, charts, bar graphs, etc. They have been working to accurately read and depict information from them. They noticed that just like maps, graphs have a key as well to help identify specific information. Literacy: Since testing time has been during our literacy block, we have found extra times through out the day to get some independent reading into our schedule. The majority of students are thankful to get 30 minutes of reading in no matter what time of day it is and if we don't have time...well, I have some upset third graders. I love how many of them LOVE to read. Writing: We finished working on poetry! Students really enjoyed our PYP Unit: How We Express Ourselves. They learned to write Haikus, Cinquains, Diamantes, and Acrostic poems. They did a great job expressing themselves about things they enjoy or dislike in life. They continued to write poetry during any free time they had because they enjoyed it so much! My classroom wall is filled with poetry they wrote to me. So fun! Testing will continue to be going on this week and into next week. We will be making our way through the next two maths test this week. They have been such troopers through all of their testing. I am VERY proud of them! :) We also had the opportunity to have a guest speaker this week. An eighth grader who is working on her eighth grade project about service dogs came in and did a presentation on them. The students got to learn how to approach service dogs and ask permission to pet them. The dogs were SO cute and the students were such inquirers about the whole thing. Many of them even raised their hands because some day they want to train dogs to become guide dogs. I would love them to take action on that someday! What a great way to give back to the world! I hope you all have been out enjoying the sunshine!
